Hi. Thanks for coming to My Website and for taking an interest in my Work. here’s a little bit about Me.
I’m Gary. I Live and Work across the Counties of Bedfordshire Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire in the UK. For most of my working life I’ve been in what felt like another world. Now, I’m getting to spend my time doing the thing I’ve always wanted to. Photography.
My interest in the photographic medium began at an early age when Newspaper and Magazine images were a way for me to experience events in the wider world. They were pictures that had a massive effect on me. Not that I knew it back then. It was only later that I came to understand my fascination. The way press photographers seemed to be able to juxtapose people with their surroundings or use timing to make a point. At that time I didn’t really understand what they were doing, I didn’t even really think about the Photographer. I just knew the pictures meant something. Stunned and Inspired by images of beauty and achievement, shocked and informed by images of atrocities and tragedy. I’d look at what I was seeing with amazement and curiosity.
And so a wannabe Photographer was conceived.
He took a long time to fully arrive. Along the way I fell in love with black and white and was drawn to the work of David Bailey. Not just by his pictures, but by his presence and character. I came to understand that his pictures were because of his persona. I was ( and still am ) Inspired by Bob Carlos Clarke His pure unadulterated passion for his craft, uncompromising in his expression, Completely unapologetic and a Complete Genius. Sadly Lost to us. In Recent Years I have come to admire and aspire to the work of Joe McNally who I consider to be a Role Model.
I used to shoot film and develop and print my own work. I still love the artisan nature of producing photographs this way but ultimately it is all about pictures for me, and having a Family and a 24/7 day job meant time was always at a premium. Digital was a game changer and I jumped on the learning curve. I quickly became like a child in a sweet shop. Every day was full of “Look ! I can do this”.”And this!” “And this”! At the same time the internet came along and now it wasn’t just a Sweet Shop it was a Playground as well.
I don’t have a single area or genre of Photography that categories me. ( I don’t think ) For me photography is a language that I use and I photograph what interests me. But there are some areas that are especially important to me
Wedding Photography
In recent years I’ve been fortunate to turn my attention to Wedding Photography. Many Photographers will tell you why they shoot Weddings. For me it is the thrill of showing someone the completed collection of their Wedding Photographs. It’ll usually be a few weeks after their Wedding Day and watching them start to relive it all again is a fantastic feeling, especially when they see a special moment captured. And that’s really just the cherry on the cake. Before that I get to spend their Wedding Day with them and as a Photographer it’s a privilege that I never take for granted. A day of wonderful atmosphere, crazy excitement and high emotion. I absolutely love it and I constantly try to capture and convey days like this in the most meaningful way I can.
Portrait Photography
Images of People are Special. There is always a story to be told about Lives, Loves, Ambitions and Achievements. Portraits have the distinction of being unique and emotive and so important to everyone connected to the picture. From Thoughtful, Considered, Intimate Portraits through to Fast Moving Activities and Events. People are a constant Inspiration and I simply don’t get tired of photographing them whatever they are doing.
